Armstrong hits record-tying home run amidst 8-3 loss to Red Raiders
Despite holding a 3-1 lead through six innings, the Bears (25-22, 11-13) were unable to overcome Tech's late-inning comeback as the Red Raiders (23-24, 7-17 Big 12) plated seven unanswered runs to come from behind and salvage the series finale.
Redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong hit his 21st home run of the season, tying BU's single-season record and joining Charley Carter (1998) at the top of the all-time leaderboard. The blast was Armstrong's seventh in the last five games, as he is believed to be the only Bear in program history to homer in five consecutive games.
Senior left-handed pitcher Ethan Calder matched his career high with seven innings on the mound, but took a no decision after Tech tied things in the eighth and chased him from the ballgame.
THE RUNDOWN
Calder was able to minimize early trouble on the mound as Tech stranded seven baserunners through the first four frames and cashed in for just one run on an RBI single in the top of the second. Meanwhile the Bears also struggled to make the most of their opportunities at the plate, leaving the bases loaded in the second and stranding five themselves through four innings.
Despite a climbing pitch count, Calder settled in and worked a few quick innings to keep BU within a run until Armstrong's record-tying swing came to lead off the bottom of the sixth. On an 0-1 pitch, Armstrong crushed an offering 404 feet to tie the ballgame and match Charley Carter's single-season record with his 21st home run of the season.
Later in the inning, a two-out double by freshman outfielder Dylan Perez kickstarted a rally and preceded back-to-back hit batters to load the bases for redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders. Against his former team, Sanders came through yet again with a two-run single, putting the Bears in front at 3-1.
Calder came back out for the seventh and worked another efficient frame, retiring the side on just six pitches. However, he ran out of gas in the eighth, allowing a leadoff single and then a game-tying two run home run before exiting.
Freshman right-hander Brayden Bergman came on to keep the game deadlocked at 3-3, and Baylor had a chance to take back the lead in the home half as Perez doubled again to give BU a pair of runners in scoring position with just one down. However, a strikeout and inning-ending groundout squandered the threat and sent things to the ninth still even at 3-3.
That's when Tech erupted for five runs on five hits, including a two-run double and two-run home run, to charge ahead at 8-3. Baylor was unable to spark anything in the bottom of the frame, falling in the series finale despite having already secured the weekend series.

Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On winning the series during this postseason push…
"You've got to feel good about getting a series win. We played our hearts out yesterday and had to fight for the second win there. You could look at this and say we're a fingernail away from sweeping the series, but we were also a fingernail away from losing two out of three. The margins are so thin. It comes down to one guy making a play, having a big performance, if one ball gets thrown away the game is different. It's just keep playing one game at a time and take care of the one game that's in front of you. It didn't work out today, but these guys came and competed really hard."
On Tyce Armstrong's record-tying home run…
"He's such a mature kid in everything that he does – how he leads this team, how he goes about his work every day. He's such a humble, low-maintenance guy. A coach's dream. He's 100% in on the team. And it's fun to see a guy like that break records and do special things. I talked to Charley Carter today and he told me when [Tyce] breaks it, he wants to call him. How cool is that? Charley's been gone 28 years, Tyce has been here for one. Charley loves this place and he and Tyce are so similar. They're such similar hitters and swings, both first baseman, and so just very happy for Tyce."
Redshirt Senior 1B Tyce Armstrong
On the team's mentality…
"We are in the grind of the season. Everybody is trying to stay healthy, stay committed and stay energized in these games. This was a really good weekend for us. It showed that we have the fight that it takes to be an NCAA tournament team."
On tying the home run record…
"I'm just grateful. I'm grateful for this opportunity. I'm grateful for these teammates, the coaches that took a chance on me, and it's just awesome that I could do it for them."
