Cherrish Wallace begins her first season as a student assistant with the Lady Bear program. She spent two seasons as a player before taking a medical retirement from basketball. Wallace, a Pasadena, Calif., native, initially suffered a stress fracture in her leg 11 games into her freshman season (2008-09). She underwent surgery in mid-September of 2009 and had a titanum rod placed in the shaft of her right tibia. However, the leg never fully recovered and she did not play her sophomore year. Due to the chronic leg injury, Wallace qualified for a medical retirement. As a true freshman guard, Wallace averaged 2.0 points and 0.6 rebounds in 11 appearances off the bench. She did not dress for 13 games (Jan. 21-March 7) due to a lower leg stress fracture; suited up for season's final six games but did not play (coaches decision). Wallace was a four-year starter at Pasadena's John Muir (Calif.) High School where she averaged 13.6 points, 4.7 assists and 3.9 steals per game as a senior. Wallace was named Region Co-MVP, Pasadena News-Star Player of the Year, two-time Pacific League MVP and two-time first team all-California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) selection. Full name is Cherrish Unikké Wallace, nickname is Wally.
