Abbi Demel concluded her third season as Baylor equestrian's assistant horsemanship coach following the 2021-22 season.
During her final campaign on staff, Demel helped the Bears to a No. 6 final national ranking and an NCEA Quarterfinals appearance. She assisted in BU's 7-8 overall record and third-place finish in the Big 12 after Baylor went 1-1 at the 2022 Big 12 Championship. Her horsemanship squad went 6-8-1 in events on the year.
Demel helped guide All-Big 12 and NCEA All-America Second Team selection Marley Mainwaring to a breakout season, going 10-5 on the year with two Most Outstanding Performer honors. Mainwaring also collected her first-career Big 12 Rider of the Month honor in November 2021 after a perfect 3-0 month with an average score of 74.67.
In 2020-21, Demel helped the Bears to an NCEA Semifinals appearance following an upset of No. 1 Auburn, snapping the Tigers' 42-meet win streak. She also helped train three NCEA All-Americans, including National Flat Rider of the Year Rachael Davis, as well as three All-Big 12 selections. Additionally, 48 Bears received NCEA academic honors, while a league-leading 30 BU student-athletes landed on the Academic All-Big 12 Team.
The Bears earned three NCEA All-America selections while Rachael Davis repeated as Big 12 Flat Rider of the Year in 2019-20.
Named an NCEA Horsemanship All-American at Baylor in 2017 and 2018, Demel finished her collegiate career with four All-Big 12 honors which includes a Most Outstanding Performer award during the 2019 Big 12 Championship.
Competing in both horsemanship and reining, Demel was a part of Baylor's 2017 and 2019 Big 12 Championship teams. She also helped the horsemanship team advance to the quarterfinals of the NCEA National Championships for two straight seasons.
A four-year letterwinner for the Bears, Demel graduated with a bachelor's degree of science in education in May 2019 and majored in health, kinesiology and leisure studies.
Demel joined the coaching staff following the Bears' successful 2018-19 campaign that included the program's fourth Big 12 title and a 9-5 overall record.
