Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson's debut as a head coach was a successful one as the Lady Bears defeated the visiting Houston Jaguars, 83-70, Wednesday in an exhibition contest in the Ferrell Center.
The Lady Bears were led by senior post Monica Arnold's 20 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Sheila Lambert, a transfer from Grayson County College and the Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, dazzled the crowd of 1,019 with flashy passes. Lambert, a 5-7 guard, tallied 19 points, a team-high six assists and five rebounds on the night. Also scoring in double figures were sophomore guard Hilary Akromis and junior post Danielle Crockrom with 11 points apiece. Crockrom and junior transfer Brooke McCormack shared team rebounding honors with seven boards each. McCormack, 6-2 post, came to the Baylor program from Grayson County College.
Baylor shot 40.6 percent (28-69) from the floor but were unimpressive from three-point range and the free throw line. The squad connected on only three of 16 treys for 18.8 percent and made only 24 of 42 free throws resulting in a 57.1 percent mark.
The Jaguars, a squad made up of former collegiate players, were led by Tekanesha Henry's 19 points which included five three-pointers. On the night the Jaguars shot better from three-point range (37 percent) than they did from the floor as a whole (35.8 percent). They were able to drill 10 treys, many of which were from NBA three-point range.
The Lady Bears return to the court on Monday, Nov. 13 when they host Slovenia's Delta Kosice in an exhibition game at 7:00 p.m. in the Ferrell Center. They begin the non-conference part of their season on the road when they participate in the Boston University Tournament on Nov. 18 & 19. The Lady Bears open the tourney against Miami (Ohio) then will play either Boston University or Yale.
