WACO, Texas - A pair of unearned runs spoiled a brilliant pitching performance by Baylor ace Chad Hawkins as the Bears dropped a close one to Oklahoma State, 2-1, Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader at the Baylor Ballpark.
OSU (7-3) jumped on top in the third inning. Designated hitter Roy York singled with two outs and scored on a three-base throwing error by Matt Williams. Anthony Hensley's throw to the plate from right field looked like it might get the runner at the plate, but York crashed into catcher Kelly Shoppach at the plate, jarring the ball loose.
The Cowboys added another unearned run in the fourth. Toby Rhodes led off the inning by reaching on an error by shortstop Jace Brewer. Rhodes advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt by Hawkins, took third on a passed ball, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Luke Scott to make it 2-0, OSU.
The Bears (9-3) loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but Nolan Leinweber and Hensley struck out to end the rally.
Baylor did push across one run in the seventh. Preston Underdown led off with a double and took third on an error by the right fielder. Rusty Rushing came on in relief for starter Matt Smith (2-2). Chris Durbin reached on an error by catcher Ryan Budde. Dorneman grounded out to the right side, scoring Underdown from third to cut the score to 2-1, but the Bears could not add any more.
Chad Hawkins (2-2) went the distance, allowing only two unearned runs while striking out nine. This is the second time this season Hawkins has taken the loss despite allowing no earned runs while going the distance.
The second game of the doubleheader is slated to start at 7 p.m.
