WACO, Texas - Even without legendary coach Jody Conradt, the Texas Longhorns proved to be too much for the Lady Bears as Texas came away with a 83-61 win Saturday night at the Ferrell Center.
Baylor trailed only 40-31 at the half, but the Longhorns came out of the locker room with a 20-9 run over the first nine minutes of the second half to up their lead to 20 points. The Lady Bears never got closer than 18 again.
"I thought the difference was in the second half, with rebounds and defense," said assistant coach Kathy Harston, who took the reigns for the Longhorns as Conradt missed the game due to illness. "Edwina [Brown] had a spurt where she had three or four steals and converted on all of them."
"They turned up their defense in the second half," Lady Bear coach Sonja Hogg said. "We didn't make the adjustments. We got in a hurry. We tried to catch up with one shot and shoot the ball before we had it."
The Lady Bears might have taken a lead into the half, were it not for sharp-shooting freshman Longhorn Alisha Sare. Sare hit six-of-10 shots, including four-of-seven from three-point range, for 17 first-half points. She finished with 18 for the game.
"I was running around like a chicken with its head cut off," Sare said. "I probably shouldn't have been doing it, it's not my role."
"I thought our kids battled hard," Hogg said. "In the first half, Alisha Sare was the difference."
In the second half, it was all-American Edwina Brown leading the Longhorns' charge. Brown finished with 28 points to lead all scorers.
Monica Arnold led the Bears in scoring with 12. Mandy Hayworth was held to eight points, all in the first half.
"I think they knew Mandy can shoot the ball," Hogg said. "They took her out of her game."
The loss drops the Lady Bears to 5-12, 0-7 in Big 12 play. Texas is now 14-6, 5-2 in conference. The next game for the Bears comes Wednesday, Feb. 2 at Oklahoma. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
