WACO, Texas - After 42 unsuccessful tries as a member of the AIAW/NCAA and 46 overall, the Baylor volleyball team defeated its arch rival, No. 12 Texas, 3-2 (15-9, 14-16, 13-15, 15-8, 15-13), Wednesday night in a slugfest extending BU's win streak to five.
The two teams combined for 208 kills, 194 assists, 307 digs and 36.5 blocks in a lengthy two hours and 43 minute match. The crowd of 1,651 at the Ferrell Center is the second largest home crowd ever for the Bears.
Baylor (21-5, 9-4 Big 12) came out swinging in the first game and took a 3-0 lead. However, the taller Longhorns blocked three consecutive balls to tie the score at 3-3. The match stayed close until BU turned a 5-5 tie into a 12-8 lead. The Bears never looked back on their way to a 15-9 win.
Baylor out-hit Texas (16-5, 10-3 Big 12) .286 to .160 in the game, despite being out-blocked five to two.
BU again came out firing in the second game, going up 5-1 before UT made a comeback and tied the score at 5-5. The Bears then went on a run of their own going up 9-5 and 10-6. The Longhorns came right back and took a 13-12 lead. The Bears could not catch up and Texas took this game 16-14.
Texas senior Erin Aldrich took off tallying 10 kills with only one error as UT again out-blocked Baylor five to four.
In usual fashion, Baylor staked to a 4-0 lead in game three before Texas roared back at 5-3 and 8-6. BU held on to the slim lead before Texas tied it at 11-11 and took their first lead at 13-12. The Longhorns pulled away behind 11 kills by Aldrich and eight by Kathy Tilson.
Texas recorded six more blocks and Baylor did not have any as UT won the game 15-13. BU stayed alive in the game with 10 kills by Kia Young and eight digs by Dana Atkinson.
Game four started off no different as Baylor built a commanding 10-2 lead. After a Texas timeout, the Horns stormed back into the game, pulling within four at 12-8. That would be as close as Texas would get as BU cruised for the 15-8 win.
Six kills by Young Tatiana Kenon were part of Dana Chuha's 20 assists in the game. This time Baylor out-blocked Texas six to four.
In the deciding game, UT started with momentum as Aldrich slammed kills into the middle of the Bear defense for a 3-1 lead. Baylor clawed back into it taking a 5-3 lead and forcing Texas to use a timeout. The halt in momentum work for the Longhorns as the game stayed close and the score was tied 8-8.
The Bears then ripped off two points to take a 10- 8 lead and Texas never recovered. The 15-13 win in game five marked the first time in 43 tries that Baylor defeated Texas. This was also the first time that the Bears had taken more than one game from the mighty Longhorns.
This was Baylor's fourth victory over a Top-20 team in a month. It was also the third victory over the No. 12 ranked team in the nation (Texas A&M, Kansas State and Texas).
Baylor set season highs in kills (111), assists (106), digs (165), and attempts (296).
Chuha set a school record in assists (101), Young in attempts (89), and Polk in digs (39).
