Baylor Men's Tennis Opens Season at Rice Invitational

HOUSTON - The Baylor men's tennis team opened the season with a bang Friday at the Rice Invitational, as three of six Baylor singles players and all three Baylor doubles teams advanced as far as the quarterfinals.
Senior Csongor Bibza opened the spring with a pair of wins. Bibza beat UT-Arlington's David Corrie, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round, then followed that in the round of 16 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Texas' Michael Domanski. He will face Jarin Skube of Texas A&M in the B Singles bracket quarterfinals Saturday.
Sophomore Sean O'Connor also won his first two matches, starting with a first-round win over Michael Torrowski of ULL, 6-2, 7-6. O'Connor then defeated Fabian Giraud of Rice in the round of 16, 7-5, 6-4. O'Connor will play Texas A&M's Nathan Price in the B Singles quarterfinals.
Freshman Cory Ross beat UT-Arlington's Alon Goldshuv in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Playing in the C Singles bracket, Ross advanced straight to the quarterfinals, where he will meet TCU's Mike Leonard.
Senior all-American Mark Williams, ranked No. 92 in the nation, started his season with an upset win over fifth-seed and 88th-ranked Daniel Wajnberg of TCU in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Williams advanced to the round of 16, where he dropped a tough match to Jorge Abos-Sanchez of Nebraska in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
Freshman Nathan McGregor lost his first collegiate match, falling to TCU's Sebastian Iannariello 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Reiner Neurohr, ranked No. 91 and the Bears' top winner in the fall, also lost his first round match, as he was defeated by Ryan Newport of Texas A&M, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Neurohr and Williams, the No. 4 doubles team in the nation and the fourth seed in the A Doubles bracket, began their season with a narrow 9-8 win over Fielding and Mendoza of TCU. In the quarters, they will play Davis and Newport of Texas A&M.
Playing in the B Doubles bracket, Bibza and McGregor beat Giraud and Reyes of Rice, 8-3. They will face Beauchamp and McInerney of TAMU-Corpus Christi in the quarterfinals.
In the C Doubles bracket, O'Connor and Ross defeated the mixed team of UT-Pan Am's Bastante and ACU's O'Connor, 8-6. The pair moved straight to the semifinals, where they will meet another mixed team in Texas A&M's El Dorry and Texas' Morris.
Senior all-American Mark Williams and freshman Reiner Neurohr are in the A Singles bracket. Senior Csongor Bibza, sophomore Sean O'Connor and freshman Nathan McGregor are in the B Singles bracket, and freshman Cory Ross is in the C Singles bracket.
