LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Baylor women's basketball team upped its record to a perfect 13-0 as the Lady Bears defeated Kansas on the road Saturday afternoon, 85-80.
The Lady Bears extended their own school record for most wins to open a season, and they also set a new school record for most consecutive wins in a season with 13. Baylor is now 2-0 in Big 12 play this season, after the loss, Kansas is 6-6 overall, 0-1 in conference.
Junior guard Sheila Lambert set a career-high with 37 points, the eighth-highest total in Baylor history. Lambert, the leading scorer in the Big 12, totaled 10 assists for her second double-double of the season.
Junior forward Danielle Crockrom, the second-leading scorer in the conference, added 23 points and 11 rebounds, her 10th double-double in 13 games this season. Freshman guard Chanelle Fox led the Lady Bears with 12 rebounds, easily besting her previous career-high of five.
Baylor trailed early before taking the lead to stay at the 15:25 mark of the first half. The Lady Bears built their advantage from there and took a 41-30 lead into the half.
In the second half, Baylor led by as much as 13 before seeing that margin cut to four with 1:13 remaining in the game. Lambert answered the Kansas charge by draining two free throws with 22 seconds to go, putting Baylor back up by six. The Jayhawks missed a three-pointer, and Lambert took it to the basket on a fast break for an 85-77 lead. Kansas hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it was too little too late.
The win was Baylor's first victory in Lawrence in four tries dating back to 1978. The Lady Bears' last win over the Jayhawks came in 1998 in Waco.
With both the Baylor men and women winning on Saturday, Baylor remains the only school in the nation to have both basketball programs undefeated at this point in the season. The Baylor men are 12-0 on the season after winning their conference opener Saturday.
The Lady Bears next game comes on the road Wednesday when Baylor plays 12th-ranked Texas Tech in Lubbock. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
