CAROLINA, Puerto Rico (AP) - Lawrence Roberts, one of Baylor's three impressive freshmen, had 17 points and 16 rebounds as the Bears beat Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 97-58 Thursday night in the Carolina Shootout.
Kenny Taylor had 18 points, including five 3-pointers in his 16 minutes, and John Lucas had 10 points. The three freshmen were the only Baylor players to score in double figures.
In what resembled a scrimmage for Baylor (8-1), 11 players scored and the Bears were deliberate in running different plays. Ten players saw at least 10 minutes of action, and the only two players that didn't score only played a minute each.
Flor Melendez had 12 points to lead Puerto Rico-Mayaguez (0-11), a third-year program still seeking its first win. UPR shot just 31 percent (20-of-64).
Roberts converted a three-point play to start the scoring less than a minute into the game. The Bears went ahead 8-0 and never trailed.
Baylor built as much as a 16-point lead in the first half before Mayaguez cut the gap to 40-32 on Luis Hilerio's four-point play with 14 seconds left. But Taylor hit a 3-pointer to end the half, putting Baylor ahead 43-32 and the Tarzans never got closer.
Lucas made a bank shot in the opening minute of the second half, when Baylor outscored Mayaguez 54-26. The Bears led by as many as 40 points.
