Kansas Upsets Baylor Men's Tennis, 5-2

WACO, Texas - The 43rd-ranked Baylor men's tennis team lost its first regular season conference match in nearly two years as the Bears were upset by No. 63 Kansas on Friday at the Streich Tennis Courts, 5-2.
The Bears (7-5, 4-1 Big 12) had won 19 of their last 20 regular season Big 12 matches, including 13 in a row, entering play Friday. Kansas (10-7, 1-1 Big 12) had lost five straight to Baylor before pulling off the win Friday.
Kansas got Baylor on edge by squeaking out the doubles point, the Bears are now 0-5 this season when losing the first point. Kansas won the No. 2 position easily, 8-4, but Baylor battled into tiebreakers at Nos. 1 and 3. Baylor's Reiner Neurohr and Mark Williams pulled off a 7-2 breaker win at No. 1 to even things up, but Kansas' Andrew Metzler and Eleazar Magellan came back from a 4-0 deficit in the tiebreaker to take a 7-5 win, laying claim to No. 3 doubles and the doubles point.
"They weren't afraid of us," Baylor head coach Matt Knoll said afterward. "They came out and hit the ball. You've got to give them credit."
Kansas won at Nos. 1, 2 and 6 singles to clinch the dual match win. After Neurohr lost at No. 2, Williams won at No. 4 and Matias Marin won at No. 5 to tie the overall score at 2-2. Kansas responded with wins at Nos. 1 and 6, the latter coming in yet another comeback fashion and winning the dual match for the Jayhawks. At the No. 6 spot, Baylor's Cory Ross won the first set 6-2, but Metzler answered with 6-1, 6-4 scores to take the win.
"We didn't sustain the focus and energy needed to execute plays from beginning to end," Knoll said. "We're not playing with the kind of passion necessary to succeed at the level we want to play."
The Bears continue Big 12 play Sunday against Oklahoma State. The match will begin at 1 p.m. at the Streich Tennis Courts.
