WACO, Texas - The 43rd-ranked Baylor men's tennis team bounced back from Friday's tough loss to Kansas with an impressive 6-1 win over No. 36 Oklahoma State Sunday at the Streich Tennis Courts.
The Bears (8-5, 5-1 Big 12) have won 20 of their last 22 regular season Big 12 matches, including three straight against Oklahoma State (7-5, 1-1). Baylor is now 3-2 all-time against the Cowboys.
As has been the case all season, the doubles point turned out to be an accurate indicator of how the Bears would perform. Baylor swept doubles with a new-look line-up that paired freshmen Cory Ross with Nathan McGregor at the No. 2 position and senior Csongor Bibza with sophomore Mike Garcia at No. 3 doubles. The Bears are 8-0 when taking the doubles point this season, including a 5-0 mark when sweeping doubles.
"Nathan and Mike came in and gave us a nice lift in doubles," Baylor head coach Matt Knoll said. "They came out and played hard, which is what we needed."
Ross won his team-leading 19th match of the year to open singles. Matias Marin followed Ross with a straight-set win at the No. 5 position, improving his record to 10-1 this spring. Bibza clinched the dual match victory for Baylor with a straight-set win over OSU's top singles player, 40th-ranked Matt Prentice. Bibza beat Prentice 7-5, 6-2 for just his second win over a ranked player this season.
"The key today was that when we were under pressure, we were the aggressors," Knoll said. "We were trying to win in pressure situations. We had more enthusiasm. It was fun to be part of the program today."
The Bears nearly swept the entire match, winning all three doubles spots and the first five singles positions before Zoltan Papp lost in three sets to Fran Krepelka, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-3. Baylor closes out a five-match homestand Friday when the team hosts No. 16 Pepperdine. The match will begin at 1 p.m. at the Streich Tennis Courts.
