Men's Tennis Christens New Facility With Win

WACO, Texas - The 31st-ranked Baylor men's tennis team opened the Baylor Tennis Center in style Tuesday night with a 6-1 win over Texas Wesleyan.
Despite playing a lineup that did not include three regular starters, Baylor (11-10, 6-2 Big 12) swept through doubles and won five of six singles spots to claim the victory from the Rams (10-14). Reigning Big 12 Player of the Week Zoltan Papp led the charge, sweeping TWU's Vincent Haulier 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
The bigger story, however, was the debut of the new center.
"This place exceeded my expectations," Baylor head coach Matt Knoll said of the complex. "It's as nice as anywhere in the country for collegiate tennis, especially when you look at the setting. You've got baseball, softball and soccer all right here, plus the river running alongside. I found myself saying 'Wow' probably 30 times tonight."
The Baylor Tennis Center will be featured prominently as Baylor hosts the 2001 Big 12 Men's and Women's Tennis Championships Thursday through Sunday. Matches Thursday and Friday will be split between the new facility and the Streich Tennis Courts. Beginning with the semifinals Saturday and continuing through the finals Sunday, all matches will be played at the Baylor Tennis Center. The Baylor women open the conference tournament Friday at 1:30 p.m. against the winner of Thursday's Nebraska-Iowa State game, the Baylor men follow Friday at 4 p.m. against Colorado. Both matches will be played at the Baylor Tennis Center.
