WACO, Texas - Baylor University has signed Rod Nealy of McLennan Community College to a national letter of intent, head men's basketball coach Dave Bliss announced Wednesday.
Nealy is a 6-6, 210-pound swingman with previous Division I experience. Prior to playing last season under head coach Ray Farrell at MCC, Nealy played in 22 games as a freshman at Arkansas-Little Rock.
"We're pleased that Rod has elected to play basketball at Baylor," Bliss said. "With the loss of Terry Black, we feel that Rod will be a good addition to our team because of his athletic ability. We're somewhat familiar with Rod because (current Baylor assistant coach) Kevin Lewis coached him in high school."
Nealy averaged 19 points and eight rebounds as a sophomore this past season at McLennan. He was named to the first team all-NTJCAA. In 1999-2000 as a freshman at Arkansas-Little Rock, Nealy averaged 3.1 points and 2.1 rebounds in 22 games. He earned one start and played 9.4 minutes per game for the Trojans.
As a prep star at Houston's Smiley High School, Nealy averaged 16 points and seven rebounds en route to being selected the District 22-4A MVP as a senior. He was also named a first team all-region and second team all-state pick.
Nealy is the fourth Baylor signee and joins three high school players inked during the early signing period. Also in the 2000-2001 Baylor signing class are forward Lawrence Roberts of Lamar High School in Houston, and guards Dandrick Jones of Kimball High School in Dallas and Kenny Taylor of Willowridge High School in Sugar Land, Texas.
