WACO, Texas - Sophomore midfielder Ryan Lee recorded her second career goal (first of the year) and assisted on the Bears' other two goals as the Baylor soccer team beat TCU Monday evening, 3-1.
The Bears (3-2) came out firing in the first half. A pass from Lee to freshman Kristin Ruef resulted in Ruef's first collegiate goal and gave Baylor a 1-0 lead at the 7:34 mark.
Lee added her second assist of the evening with 13 minutes to go in the half. The sophomore's pass to fellow sophomore Emily Fukuchi was redirected to freshman April Robertson, who headed it in to up the Bears' lead to 2-0. Robertson's score was her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Baylor took that 2-0 lead into the half, but the Horned Frogs (2-3) came out firing in the second period and controlled the ball for the majority of the first 25 minutes of the half. That aggressive attack ultimately resulted in Laura Greenburg's goal at 60:25 (assisted by Cara Toulouse), which cut the Baylor lead in half.
That lead held precariously at one until Lee scored an insurance goal with under three minutes to go in the game. Freshman Ginny Rosario-Tull penetrated the TCU defense, spun past one defender near the sidebar and fed the ball perfectly to Lee, who tapped it in to cap off her outstanding performance.
"This was a game of two halves," Baylor head coach Nick Cowell said. "We played really well the first 20 minutes or so, but we lost something when the substitutions started coming in... There is no excuse for the way we played the second half, because we should have been fresh again."
Emily Koch, who continues to play through tremendous pain, played the full 90 minutes in goal for the win. The sophomore goalkeeper has yet to be able to particpate in practice due to back troubles but has started four of Baylor's five games this season.
The Bears were forced to depend on their depth for much of the night as several players battle injuries. Senior co-captain Alyson Miles sat out the night with an infected toe, before Monday, the midfielder had played in every game during her three-plus years at Baylor. Miles' consecutive-games-played streak came to an end at 64, the fifth-longest such streak in school history.
Freshman goalie Mel Pannell is still on the sidelines recooperating from a shoulder injury, and Baylor's other senior co-captain, Rachel Kacsmaryk, saw only limited action as she battles a strained neck.
The Bears continue their short homestand Friday evening against Rice. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
