WACO, Texas - The Baylor soccer team matched its season-high offensive output from a year ago with four goals and sophomore Emily Koch recorded her first career shutout as the Bears beat Furman 4-0 Sunday evening at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field in the final game of the Baylor Labor Day Classic.
"We disrupted their style of play," Baylor head coach Nick Cowell said. "They're a very deliberate, patient team ... We stepped up the tempo, so that everything they did was hurried. We did what we set out to do, and that's pleasing from a coach's perspective."
Baylor (1-1) jumped in front early when, in the 11th minute, junior Barbara Torres took an unexpected shot from 30 yards out and placed it neatly in the right side of the net to put the Bears up 1-0.
Later in the first half, sophomore midfielder Candace Reilly shot the ball from the middle of the box over the leaping Furman goalkeeper for Baylor's second score.
In the second half, a foul in the box led to a penalty kick for the Bears. Freshman Ginny Rosario-Tull converted on the opportunity, putting the Bears up 3-0 in the 50th minute.
Ten minutes later, sophomore Emily Fukuchi became the fourth Bear of the evening to record her first goal of the season. Fukuchi's shot from the left side was assisted by sophomore Ryan Lee.
The goals by Torres, Reilly and Rosario-Tull were each the first of that player's career at Baylor. For Reilly and Rosario-Tull, the scores were the first of their collegiate career, Torres scored six times as a freshman at Georgetown before she transferred to Baylor.
Koch, who was seeing her first action of any kind this fall, played the entire game to collect the shutout. The sophomore goalkeeper has been held out of practices with a bad back, but was forced into action when freshman goalie Mel Pannell injured her shoulder Friday night against Arizona State. Pannell is expected to be out at least four weeks.
"I owe a lot to the defense," Koch said. "[Furman] had very few chances to get at the goal tonight."
Baylor held sophomore Emily Turgeon, the 2000 NCAA Division-I points leader, to just one shot on the evening. The Bears as a team outshot Furman, 12-8 (shots on goal: 9-5, Baylor).
NOTES: Sunday evening's game was played in front of 330 fans ...
