WACO, Texas - Baylor outshot Rice 21-2 as the Bears' offense controlled the ball for nearly the entire game in a 3-1 win over the Owls Friday night at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.
Baylor (4-2) kept first-year-program Rice (1-3) on its heels throughout the first half and for much of the second half. Freshman April Robertson started the scoring for the Bears in the 25th minute, heading in a corner kick by senior co-captain Alyson Miles to put Baylor up 1-0. Robertson's goal was her team-leading fifth of the season.
Six-and-a-half minutes later, freshman Sarah Dearing gave the Bears a 2-0 lead as she became the fifth freshman on the team to score this season. Sophomore Emily Fukuchi's feed to Dearing led to the goal, which came from 15 yards out on the left side.
Rice came out of the locker room at halftime with a bit more energy, taking more control of the ball. A pair of quick, successive passes from the Owls' Sarah Yoder to Kristen Lindsay to Kelly Potysman ended in a goal by the freshman Potysman, cutting the Bears lead to one just under 10 minutes into the half.
The Bears quickly bounced back to build the lead to 3-1 when, three minutes later, junior Whitney Barrett's shot from 28 yards out went over the leaping Rice goalkeeper and into the net. Barrett's score, her first of the year, was assisted by sophomore Candace Reilly.
"I was a little disappointed," Baylor head coach Nick Cowell said. "We had one breakdown that allowed them to score. We talked about it at halftime, that you have to learn to put the screws on... That is definitely something we had better learn."
Baylor's revolving door at goalkeeper continued when the Bears' fourth different goalkeeper of the year saw action in the second half. After sophomore Emily Koch shut out the Owls in the first half, sophomore Stephanie Dempsey took over in the net for the second period. Dempsey, playing goal for the first time in her life at any level, finished out the game for the Bears.
"Stephanie needed to get some experience at some point, and that was a good time," Cowell said. "We don't want to see Emily get hurt, so any time we can give her off is good."
The Bears begin conference play Sept. 28, as they head to Nebraska to face the fourth-ranked and two-time defending Big 12 Champion Huskers. The game is set for 7 p.m. at Nebraska's Abbott Sports Complex.
