DALLAS (AP) - John Lucas had 21 points and seven assists and R.T. Guinn added 20 points as Baylor beat Alcorn State 81-61 in the Lone Star Basketball Classic on Saturday night.
Lee Cook led Alcorn State with 28 points, and Tori Harris added 15 for the Braves, who stayed close until late in the second half.
Alcorn State chipped away at a 10-point deficit in the second half, with Harris closing the gap to 57-55 on a three-point play with 8:30 left.
But Baylor (1-0) closed the game with a 24-6 run, holding Alcorn state (0-2) to one field goal over the next seven minutes.
Ellis Kidd Jr. playing in his first game for the Bears after transferring from Oklahoma State, hit two 3-pointers during the stretch. Kidd finished with 11 points, all of which came in the second half.
The Bears hit 15 3-pointers, including five from Lucas. Guinn's dunk on an assist by Lucas with 6:18 left in the first half capped a 12-0 run that allowed Baylor to take a 29-17 lead, and the Bears never trailed after that.
Baylor, which led 38-35 at the half, broke an 11-game losing streak away from Waco.
"They went to the tournament, so we knew it wasn't going to be a cakewalk," Lucas said. "Now we have the monkey off our back and we can get back to playing basketball."
