WACO, Texas - Baylor University has hired Waco-native Rodney Belcher as an assistant men's basketball coach, head coach Dave Bliss announced Thursday.
"We are thrilled with the homegrown addition to the Baylor athletic department," Bliss said. "Having grown up in Waco and attended McLennan Community College, we think Rodney will really be able to sell Baylor basketball."
Belcher most recently coached at New Mexico, where he spent the 2001-2002 season as an assistant to Fran Fraschilla. He replaces Kevin Lewis, who accepted a position at TCU in April.
Prior to UNM, Belcher coached at McKinney High School from 1998-2001, the last season as head coach. He was head coach at Bryan Adams High School in Dallas from 1994-98, where he coached future All-American and No. 1 NBA draft pick Kenyon Martin. Belcher also coached at Plano High School (1993-94) and Vines High School in Plano (1990-93).
Belcher has more than 10 years experience as an AAU coach in Texas, most recently with the Team Texas Select, a squad featuring the top players in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
A graduate of Waco High School and MCC, Belcher played basketball for coaches Jessie Williams and Ken DeWeese, respectively. He finished his career at North Texas under former Baylor assistant Tommy Newman, where he played from 1983-85.
