Game 2 - Nebraska 11, Baylor 9

  • Nebraska scored four runs in the second and sixth innings, then had to hold off a late Baylor rally as the Huskers defeated the Bears 11-9 in the second game of the afternoon session.
  • The Huskers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second, thanks to a two-run single by Daniel Bruce.
  • Baylor came right back in the top of the third to score three times off Nebraska starter Aaron Marsden to cut the Husker advantage to 4-3. Tim Hartshorn had the big hit in the inning with a two-run single to left.
  • Nebraska scored a single run in the third to make it 5-3 on a sacrifice fly by John Grose, scoring Jeff Blevins, who doubled to start the inning.
  • David Murphy cut the gap to 5-4 with a solo homer in the fourth.
  • After a single run in the fifth on a Matt Hopper homer to dead center, Nebraska exploded for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to stretch the advantage to 10-5. Bruce, Jed Morris, Hopper and Justin Seely each drove in run in the sixth inning uprising.
  • But Baylor was not done yet as the Bears scored four times in the top of the seventh to get within a run at 10-9, Thanks to a three-run homer to right center by pinch hitter Ross Bennett.
  • The Huskers scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a single to right by Drew Anderson to put the game out of reach.
  • Marsden went six innings to get the victory for the Huskers, while Jared Theodorakos gave up 10 runs in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss. Steve Hale pitched 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief to pickup his second save of the season.
  • Nebraska second baseman Will Boat tied a Big 12 Conference Tournament record with two doubles in a game, the last done by Jeff Freeman of Texas A&M against the Huskers in the 2001 tournament.
  • The victory makes Nebraska 14-1 in Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament play and was their 10th straight victory, dating back to 2000.
