WACO, Texas - Three of Baylor's head coaches spoke to the media at Tuesday's press luncheon. Below are excerpts from their comments.
Head Volleyball Coach Brian Hosfeld:
On the upcoming schedule:
"It will definitely be a big week for us coming up with Texas Tech. We hope to be able to salvage some wins in the next three matches and try to get back to 500. Nebraska is No. 8 and A&M is No. 24. We did see a light when Kansas State beat Nebraska, and we beat K-State. We just need people to be consistent; we have done some great things and some not so great things. We have the ability to put together a good run and knock off ranked teams. A&M doesn't have just one attacker they play good defense, but I think we're more physical at the net. They have a lot of people that move around, and it should be a good match."
Head Soccer Coach George Van Linder:
On the upcoming schedule:
"We are excited about only having one game this weekend. The past two weeks have been difficult because we have been playing ranked teams on the road. We feel we played well against Texas and Texas A&M, but they just happen to be really good teams. We are thankful we only have one game this weekend, against Oklahoma. I think we match up against them well and it should be easier than a team like A&M. We haven't scored goals in four of our last five games; we have added a third forward in an effort to get more scoring. We have talked about near misses and how we are going to score in the future. These nationally ranked teams have given us good experience for the future. Our players have a lot of heart; we just aren't the fastest or strongest team in the Big 12."
Head Football Coach Guy Morriss:
On the team's outlook following last week's loss to Texas A&M:
"We are in better spirits today, and I think we're ready to get back to work. I think we'll play hard and have a chance to win. I felt last week we had a great week of practice and went down there to the big stadium and I thought we had gotten all the jitters out. I felt we came out of the locker room ready to play, but this last weekend, bad things started happening to us and we lost our focus and composure. We have to understand that when you travel and go into hostile territory you have to be able to focus. If you let yourself start to slide it's hard to regain momentum. I don't think we are that bad of a football team, even though the score was 73-10."
"We just need to keep growing and throw the brakes on the losing, because it can be a snowball effect. I just want to see the kids play hard for 60 minutes and not worry about the score. We have to redline it every play; we'll worry about the score when it's over. We have to do a better job of getting lined up right and communicating better, and taking care of your responsibility. It sounds simple, but not taking care of the little things can hurt you.
