WACO, Texas - Baylor assistant basketball coach Matt Driscoll and freshman Turner Phipps visited Eagle Academy of Waco on Friday. The visit was part of Baylor Athletics' continuing community relations program.
Eagle Academy of Waco is one of 17 free public schools in the state of Texas offering an individualized and accelerated learning program for its students in grades 6-12.
Driscoll and Phipps discussed the value of education and the importance of graduating from high school. They also stressed responsibility and reminded the kids what it means to be their own person and avoid peer pressure.
Driscoll, who has spent 16 years educating all ages, acknowledged that the students are under extreme pressure from other kids to do the wrong thing everyday.
"You know what, though? If they really are your friend, they'll support you in doing the right thing and love you no matter what," he said.
He also encouraged the students to open up to their teachers.
"You know, your teachers know that you have all kinds of things going on in your life every time you walk through that door," he said, "but they can't help you if you don't talk to them about it. Hey, that is what they're there for."
Phipps spoke to the students about sticking with high school and the meaning of graduating.
"I know it's hard sometimes, and you feel like you are just getting by with C's and D's," he said, "but there is no better feeling of accomplishment for yourself than getting that diploma."
After answering questions, Driscoll and Phipps donated basketball posters and 100 ticket vouchers to the students.
