WACO, Texas - Baylor men's basketball coach Scott Drew announced Tuesday the signing of Australian guard Aaron Bruce to a national letter of intent for the 2004-2005 season.
"Aaron has been very successful competing against the best USA college athletes, and we're excited about him joining the Baylor basketball program," Drew said. "Aaron also possesses the experience necessary to compete at the Division I level because of his international playing experience."
Bruce spent last summer playing for the Australian junior national team in the 2003 FIBA Junior World Championships in Thessaloniki, Greece. The 6-foot-2 guard led Australia with 25 points against Team USA, which featured Dee Brown and J.J. Redick, as the Aussies upset the Americans 106-85.
HoopScoop Magazine's analysts report that if Bruce were playing high school basketball in the United States, he would rank among the top 70 prospects in the country. Bruce joins the 7-foot-tall Senegal native Mamadou Diene on the list of the Bears' 2003 early signees.
Based just on those two signings, the Bears' signing class is tied for 34th in the nation in HoopScoop's rankings, matching the likes of Cincinnati, Oklahoma and Syracuse.
