Baylor Women Golfers In First At Central District Classic

PARRISH, Fla. - Baylor's women's golf team is currently leading the 15-team field after shooting a two-round total of 613 (302-311) on Monday. Through 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament, the Bears hold a five-stroke edge over Missouri, Ohio State and Kansas State. The tournament is being played at the 72-par, 6,099-yard River Wilderness Golf Club.

The Bears are led by seniors Melanie Hagewood and Hanna-Sofia Svenningsson, who are currently tied for the lead. Hagewood opened up the spring campaign with a 72 followed by a 77 for a two-round total of 149. Svenningsson carded rounds of 75 and 74 to match Hagewood's total. Both golfers are tied with Kristen White of Ohio State (77-72) for the lead with one round remaining. Three golfers are tied for second, one stroke behind the lead.

Junior Kelli McKandless is tied for 26th place after recording a two-round total of 157 (76-81). Junior Michaelyn Morgan is two strokes behind her teammate shooting a 159 (79-80) on the first day of the spring season. With a score of 162 (82-80), freshman Josefin Svenningsson is tied for 51st.

After posting a school-record three tournament wins in the fall, the Bears hope to finish strong in their first tournament of 2003. The third and final round of the event will be contested on Tuesday.
