Baylor Women's Golf Finishes Schooner Fall Classic with Five-Under Final Round

Boczar and Castro lead the Bears in a strong closing effort
NORMAN, Okla. – Baylor women's golf closed out its second event of the fall season Monday at the Schooner Fall Classic, finishing tied for eighth in a 16-team field featuring programs from three of the four power four conferences.Â
The Bears posted rounds of 5-over and 4-over through the first two days before turning in their best performance of the week with a 6-under final round. Baylor's closing round, highlighted by a pair of scores in the 60s, was the second-lowest team score of the day and helped the Bears climb the leaderboard into a tie for eighth.Â
"Today was a really encouraging finish and much more representative of the golf we know this group is capable of playing," head coach Jay Goble said. "Malena and Bridget were both outstanding, and Bridget put together a special round that tied the lowest score in program history."Â
Junior Malena Castro carded three rounds of par or better, closing the week with a 4-under 66 to finish tied for 14th. The result marked Castro's second top-15 finish in as many events this season.Â
Senior Bridget Boczar also played a key role in Baylor's final-round surge, firing a 5-under 65 to finish tied for 22nd. Her round featured a hole-in-one on the 185-yard, par-3 sixth hole. Boczar's 65 also placed her among a group of 12 players tied for the lowest individual round in program history.Â
Freshman Sofie Nooij made her collegiate debut and opened her career in red figures with a 2-under 68 in the first round, recording six birdies along the way. Junior Yurang Li found her best form of the week in the final round with a 1-over 71, while freshman Sophia Ellestad contributed to the Baylor lineup in all three rounds and finished tied for 62nd at 9-over.Â
"I was also really proud of Sofie and Sophia," Goble said. "Both were making their collegiate debuts this week, and they handled the experience really well. There are a lot of positives for us to take away from this week, and now we'll regroup and turn our attention to Knoxville."Â
Iowa State claimed the team title at 30-under for the week, finishing 17 shots ahead of runner-up Oklahoma at 13-under. Cyclones junior Alexandra Vidal Rivera claimed the team title. Â Â
The Bears will return to Waco for the remainder of September before heading back on the road for the Tennessee Intercollegiate, Oct. 4–6, in Knoxville, Tenn. The Schooner Fall Classic marked the midway point of Baylor's four-event fall schedule, with two tournaments remaining before the winter break.Â
