WACO, Texas - Benedikt Dorsch's impressive rookie season ended one victory short of every collegiate tennis player's ultimate goal, a national championship. Illinois' Amer Delic defeated Dorsch in the championship match of the 2003 NCAA Men's Singles Tournament Monday afternoon at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Delic, the tournament's third seed, defeated the Baylor sophomore in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. In the second set, the match was even until the fifth game when Delic, a junior, broke Dorsch's serve after Dorsch, the tournament's No. 2 seed, fought off two break points. Delic broke Dorsch again in the ninth game to claim the second set and the national crown.
Dorsch, the Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Year, finished the 2002-03 season with a school record 49 victories (49-6). In addition, Dorsch became the program's first double All-American when he and doubles partner Reiner Neurohr advanced to the quarterfinals in the doubles portion of the NCAA tournament. Dorsch was automatically an All-American in singles when he was named a top eight seed for the tournament. He and Neurohr also set a new Baylor record for most doubles wins in a season by a team with 26. Dorsch ranks No. 2 on Baylor's list for doubles wins in a season with 32 and, in just one season, ranks No. 10 on Baylor's career singles wins list.
AN ESPN broadcast of the 2003 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships will be aired on Tuesday, May 27 at 1 p.m. (CDT).
