WACO, Texas - Texas Tech hit .278 for the match and served up 14 aces, while Baylor couldn't find consistency on offensively in a 3-1 (30-28, 24-30, 18-30, 27-30) loss in Big 12 volleyball action Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center.
"We came out not playing our best ball, but we won game one and thought that we would pick it up," head coach Jim Barnes said. "Some people didn't show up at key times. Tech was more aggressive tonight, running a quicker offense, we were just a step slow."
Junior outside hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) led Baylor (9-9, 3-6 Big 12) with 12 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) and junior middle blocker Adeline Meira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had 11 kills each. Freshman libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) recorded a match-high 18 digs, her eighth straight match in double figures, and junior outside hitter Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) had 13.
Kelly Johnson had a match-high 21 kills for Texas Tech (7-7, 3-5), while Kiley Lyons added 19. Lyons and Johnson each had 13 digs, while Desiree Batista added 12 and Laura Grote had 10.
Baylor came back from a 13-8 deficit to tie game one at 17. The teams would tie five times down the stretch before the Bears jumped on top 29-27 and held on for the 30-28 victory. The Bears hit .433 in the game, while the Red Raiders hit .216.
Texas Tech led from the start in game two, jumping out to a 7-1 lead. The Bears clawed back by going on a 10-1 run midway through the game to cutting the lead to 22-21, but the Red Raiders' offense took over and evened the match with a 30-24 decision.
Game three was all Texas Tech as it scored seven straight midway through the game to take an 18-7 lead. The Red Raiders hit .308 for the game, compared to only .023 for the Bears in a 30-18 victory.
Game four was a tight contest with neither team ever leading by more than four. Baylor took a 14-10 lead, but Texas Tech fought back to take a 24-20 advantage. The Bears pulled to within one at 25-24, but the Red Raiders again turned away the challenge, 30-27.
The Bears take a break from conference play as they host Northwestern (La.) State Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
