Texas Tech Rallies Past Volleyball 3-2

LUBBOCK, Texas - Baylor put Texas Tech on its heels, but the Red Raiders rallied to take the final two games and close out the Bears, 3-2 (30-23, 24-30, 27-30, 30-28, 15-12) in Big 12 volleyball action Wednesday night at United Spirit Arena.
Sophomore middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) led Baylor (10-12, 3-9 Big 12) with a career-high 17 kills and added eight blocks. Sophomore right-side hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) had 16 kills, while junior outside hitter Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) had 14 and junior outside hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) had 10. Freshman libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) registered a career-high 25 digs to lead the Bears defensively, while junior setter Emily Huston (Santa Rosa, Calif.) had 60 assists and 10 digs. Junior defensive specialist Maggie Chlebana (Calgary, Alberta) chipped in with 13 digs.
Kelly Johnson led Texas Tech (8-10, 4-8) with 29 kills. Desiree Batista led the Red Raiders defensively with 28 digs, while Kiley Lyons added 12 and Amy Charlebois had 10.
Texas Tech edged ahead to a 16-12 lead in game one, but Baylor scored four straight to tie it at 16-16. The Red Raiders answered with a five-point run to go up 22-17 and went on for a 30-23 victory. Texas Tech hit .306 for the game, while Baylor hit .188.
The Bears jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the Red Raiders quickly closed the gap to tie game two at 6-6. The two teams traded points until Texas Tech went on a 6-2 run to go up 20-16. Baylor responded with a 6-1 run to take a 22-21 lead, then squared the match by scoring the last five points of the game to take a 30-24 win. The Bears bounced back to hit .366, while the Red Raiders hit only .042.
Baylor came out hot after the break, taking an 12-5 lead, including a couple of kills and blocks from Guilliard-Young. The Bears built their lead up to nine on four occasions, the last time at 23-14, before the Red Raiders went on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to two at 25-23. The two teams then traded sideouts the rest of the way as the Bears held on for a 30-27 decision to go up 2-1. The Bears had 20 kills in the game and hit .179.
Freshman Amanda Modglin (Houston, Texas) subbed into game four and served the Bears on a six-point run to take a 9-4 lead. The run included three kills and two blocks by Guilliard-Young. Texas Tech answered back to tie the game at 10-10, but Baylor scored the next three points. After the Bears went up 19-16, the Red Raiders fought back to tie the game at 21-21. Texas Tech took a two-point lead at 25-23, but Baylor came back and took a 27-26 lead on an ace by Modglin, but the Red Raiders were tough down the stretch and tied the match with a 30-28 win. The Bears hit .115 for the game, while the Red Raiders hit .167.
Texas Tech jumped out to a 4-1 lead in game five, but Baylor used a four-point run to tie the game at 10-10. The Red Raiders scored three straight to go up 13-10 and put the Bears away 15-12.
The Bears return to action when they face No. 10 Texas Saturday at 7 p.m. at Gregory Gym in Austin.
