Volleyball Falls to No. 10 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas - Baylor couldn't match Texas' firepower as the 10th-ranked Longhorns downed the Bears, 3-0 (30-23, 30-19, 30-12), in Big 12 volleyball action Saturday night at Gregory Gym.
Junior outside hitter Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) and sophomore middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) had eight kills each to lead the Bears (10-13, 3-10 Big 12), while sophomore right-side hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) had a team-high 10 digs. The Bears hit only .160 for the match and outblocked Texas, 7.0-6.0.
Mira Topic had 20 kills and Bethany Howden added 15 for Texas (19-2, 11-2), while Alyson Jennings recorded 13 digs. The Longhorns hit .373 for the match and outdug the Bears, 43-27.
Texas used a five-point run early to take a 9-2 lead, but Baylor bounced back and a five-point run of its own cut the lead to 16-15. Three straight points by the Longhorns gave them some breathing room at 22-18 as they closed out the game, 30-23. Texas hit .244 for the game, while Baylor hit .147.
The Bears took an 11-7 lead in game two, but the Longhorns stole the momentum with eight straight to take a 15-11 lead. Another five-point run late helped Texas take a 26-16 advantage before winning the game, 30-19. Baylor was more efficiently offensively, hitting .243, but Texas had 20 kills and hit .421.
Texas jumped out to a 9-3 lead in game three and never let up as a pair of six-point runs gave the Longhorns a 27-8 lead and they closed out the match, 30-12.
The Bears will have a quick turnaround as they face Texas San-Antonio in a non-conference match Sunday at the UTSA Convocation Center in San Antonio.
