Game 3 Swing Keys Volleyball Win at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa - Baylor overcame early offensive struggles and used a tremendous comeback in game three to hold off Iowa State, 3-1 (23-30, 30-25, 34-32, 30-22), in Big 12 volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. The Bears improved their record to 9-0 all-time in Ames, and recorded their first Big 12 road win in nearly a year.
Sophomore right-side hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) led Baylor (9-8, 3-5 Big 12) with 14 kills and 13 digs for her sixth double-double of the season, while junior outside hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) added 13 kills. Freshman libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) led the Bears defensively with 19 digs, the seventh straight match in which she has recorded double-digit digs. Sophomore middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) recorded the first double-digit block match of her career as she registered a career-high 10 stuffs to go along with eight kills.
Junior middle blocker Adeline Meira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added nine kills and eight blocks, while junior outside hitter Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) pitched in with nine kills and 16 digs. Junior setter Emily Huston (Santa Rosa, Calif.) posted her seventh double-double of the season with 48 assists and 13 digs. The Bears last Big 12 road win was a 3-2 decision over Texas Tech in Lubbock Oct. 15, 2003.
Nicole Lorenzen led ISU (7-8, 1-7) with 12 kills, while Brittany Dalager and Kate Kruenegel had 10 each. Amanda Craig had 14 digs to lead three Cyclones with double figure digs.
Baylor's offensive woes continued in game one as ISU took the lead at 6-5 and never looked back. The Bears cut the lead to two on a couple of occasions, but a three-point run by the Cyclones gave them a 24-19 edge. Service and hitting errors allowed ISU to put the game away, 30-23. The Bears hit -.026, while Iowa State hit .167 and won the game with only nine kills.
The Bears came out inspired in game two as a pair of four-point runs gave them a 14-5 lead. The Cyclones answered back with five-striaght points to cut the lead to 15-11. Baylor upped its lead back to as many as seven before a 9-1 run gave ISU a 23-22 lead. Baylor scored three straight to take the lead back, 26-24, and evened up the match on an ace by Odion and a block by Meira and LeBlanc, 30-25. The Bears hit .184 in game two, while holding the Cyclones to .051 and also came back with six blocks. Baylor also settled down from the service line, committing only one error after five in game one.
Iowa State grabbed the momentum after the break by scoring five-straight to take a 14-8 lead, but a 9-2 run put Baylor up 17-16. With the game tied at 20, ISU scored eight straight to seemingly put the game away, but Baylor had other plans as it scored 10 of next 11 points to take a 30-29 lead. Baylor fought off two match points down the stretch and a ball handling error by Iowa State tied it at 32. The Bears then had to tighten up on defense and forced two Cyclone hitting errors to clinch the 2-1 lead, 34-32. Neither team hit particularly well as Baylor hit .045 and ISU hit .034.
The two sides traded blows back-and-forth for much of game four with neither team taking more than a three-point lead until late. Baylor used a four-point run to take a 20-18 lead and later scored three more in a row to go up 25-20. LeBlanc, who had seven kills in the fourth game, led the way for Baylor down the stretch, recording three of the Bears last four kills and serving them to match point at 29-21. Guilliard-Young put the match away with a kills to make it 30-22. The Bears hit much better in the game at .265, while Iowa State hit only .054 thanks to several errors late. Baylor.
The Bears return to action when they host Texas Tech Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
