WACO, Texas - Cory VanAllen and Zane Carlson combined for a seven-inning no-hitter as 11th-ranked Baylor blanked Loyola Marymount 1-0 in the back end of a doubleheader here Sunday at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears won the first game 5-4.
VanAllen pitched six perfect innings for the Bears (2-1), before the first batter in the seventh reached on a fielding error by second baseman Drew Sutton. Carlson then recorded the final three outs to finish off the no-hitter and record his second save of the day. VanAllen struck out four without a walk, while Carlson ended the game with his lone strikeout of the inning.
The no-hitter is the seventh in the history of Baylor baseball and the first since April 15, 2000 when Kyle Evans shut down Iowa State 4-0 in a nine-inning game. Five of Baylor's seven no-nos have been in seven inning games. Only Evans' 2000 effort and Andy Beene's 1979 gem against Texas Tech were in nine-inning affairs. VanAllen and Carlson become the fourth pair of Bears to combine for a no-hitter.
Baylor scored their only run of the game in sixth inning when Michael Griffin singled in the up the middle with runners at first and second. That scored Seth Fortenberry, who led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a Sutton single.
In game one of the doubleheader, the game was held scoreless until the fourth inning when Tyler Bullock singled in Josh Ford giving the Bears a 1-0 lead. The following inning, the Bears manufactured four runs on four hits, expanding their lead to 5-0.
LMU capitalized on a couple of Baylor miscues in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 5-3. The Lions added another run in the eighth before Carlson came in to close the door.
Trey Taylor (1-0) won his first start of the season; he tossed five scoreless inning and allowed two hits with four strikeouts. Carlson threw the final two innings, striking out a pair, after relief outings by Ryan LaMotta and Abe Woody.
The Bears will return to action on Tuesday as they take on Texas-San Antonio. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
