Volleyball Pounds Centenary for Fourth Straight Win

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Baylor sophomore middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) hit .423 with 15 kills to lead the Bears to a sweep of Centenary, 3-0 (30-18, 30-22, 30-19), in volleyball action at the Sam Houston State Tournament Saturday at Johnson Coliseum.
Sophomore right-side hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) and junior outside hitters Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) and Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) each had seven kills each. Odion also led the Bears (5-3) with 12 digs, while freshman defensive specialist Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) added 10. Freshman middle blocker Amanda Modglin (Houston, Texas) made her first start of the season and hit .500 with six kills and led had a match-high five blocks. Junior setter Emily Huston (Santa Rosa, Calif.) had 37 assists, five kills, five digs and quarterbacked the Bears' attack to a .343 attack percentage.
Game one went back-and-forth until Baylor ripped off six straight points to go up 13-8. The Bears used a consistent attack, hitting .324, to push the lead to 12 and close out the game, 30-18. Centenary hit .000 for the game with only eight kills.
Baylor quickly opened up a 12-4 lead behind four early kills from Guilliard-Young. The Bears hit .371 for the game, while holding the Ladies to .091. Baylor led by as many as 10 at 20-10 and took a two-game advantage, 30-22.
Centenary fought early in game three, tying the game at 9-9, but with Spriggs serving for the first time this season, Baylor reeled off a six-point rally to take control of the game. The Bears , which led by 11 three times, hit .333 while holding the Ladies to -.030, to clinch the match, 30-19.
Tracee Byrd led Centenary with nine kills, while Ashley Templer added eight. Emily Longerot led the Ladies with 11 digs. Baylor also held Centenary to only a .019 attack percentage for the match.
Head coach Jim Barnes was able to rest starters Odion, junior middle blocker Adeline Meira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and junior libero Maggie Chlebana (Calgary, Alberta), while getting valuable playing time from Modglin, freshman libero Heather Marcus (Grand Prairie, Texas) and Schramek at outside hitter.
The Bears return to action in the tournament finale against host Sam Houston State tonight at 7 p.m.
