Eastern Michigan Holds Off Volleyball 3-1

OXFORD, Miss. - Junior outside hitter Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) and sophomore middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) each tied their career highs in kills, but Baylor's rally from two games down fell short against Eastern Michigan in a 3-1 (19-30, 22-30, 33-31, 23-30) loss in volleyball action at the Magnolia Invitational hosted by Ole Miss Saturday at Gillom Sports Center. Odion led the Bears (1-3) with 20 kills and added 11 digs for her second double-double of the season. Guilliard-Young hit .419 with 16 kills and six blocks. Sophomore right-side hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) had 11 kilss and a team-high 14 digs. Junior setter Emily Huston (Santa Rosa, Calif.) had 43 assists and 10 digs, while junior libero Maggie Chlebana (Calgary, Alberta) and freshman defensive specialist Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) each had double-digit digs with 13 and 10, respectively. EMU (3-1) steadily built up a seven-point lead in game one at 25-18, then scored four straight points to get to game point. After Baylor sided out, EMU closed out the game, 30-19. The Eagles hit .487 in the game, compared to just .147 for the Bears. Guilliard-Young led Baylor, hitting .833 with five kills. The Eagles used a consistent attack to again build up a lead in game two. EMU jumped out to as much as an 11-point lead, before Baylor put together a few more points to cut the final game score to 30-22. Odion had six kills in the game to lead the Bears, who hit .119. After falling behind 9-5, the Bears came back to tie game three at 11 and 13, but EMU scored four-straight to regain control. Baylor later fought back with four straight and tied the game on an ace by Schramek, 23-23. The two teams traded points until a block by LeBlanc and freshman Amanda Modglin (Houston, Texas) and another kill by LeBlanc gave the Bears a 28-26 lead, but EMU quickly tied the game at 28. The teams traded points again until an attack error and a block gave the Bears the game, 33-31. The Bears hit .220 for the game and were led by Guilliard-Young's seven kills and four blocks as well as four kills by Odion. Baylor trailed by as many as seven in game four and couldn't get closer than four the rest of the way as EMU clinched the match, 30-23. For the game, EMU hit .344, while Baylor hit .186. Odion and Huston were named to the all-tournament team, the first such honor of Odion's career. Eastern Michigan's Emily Busch and Becky Baltare were also named to the all-tournament team along with two players from tournament champion Ole Miss - Elena Garcia and Jillian Ohrman. Ole Miss' Kristen Carroll was named the most valuable player. The Bears return to action when they host UT-Pan American in the home opener Wednesday at the Ferrell Center at 7 p.m.
