WACO, Texas - Sophia Young was named Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for games played from Jan. 3-9, the conference office announced Monday.
Young was honored for the second time this season and fifth time in her career, three times as Player of the Week and twice as Rookie of the Week. Spiric earned her first Big 12 honor. Players are nominated by each school's sports information office and voted on by a panel of media who cover Big 12 women's basketball.
Young, a 6-1 junior forward, led Baylor to a 2-0 record in conference play last week with wins over Texas A&M and No. 7 Texas. She averaged 23.0 points and 13.5 rebounds while topping the Lady Bears in scoring and rebounding in both contests. Young recorded the 33rd and 34th double-doubles of her career with 21 points and 12 rebounds against Texas A&M and season-highs of 25 points and 15 rebounds versus Texas. The St. Vincent, West Indies, native was 20-of-33 from the floor for 60.6 percent and was 6-of-7 from the free throw line. She also dished out five assists, blocked four shots and stole seven balls. In Baylor's win over Texas, Young made two clutch free throws with 20 seconds remaining to put Baylor up 63-60, the final winning score. In addition, she was stellar on defense, limiting Texas' Tiffany Jackson to 3-of-13 from the field.
