WACO, Texas - Baylor women's basketball's Sophia Young became the university's first preseason Associated Press (AP) All-American when the prestigious five-member team was announced on Wednesday.
Young, a 6-1 senior forward/post, shared AP honors with LSU's Seimone Augustus, Ohio State's Jessica Davenport, Duke's Monique Curry and Rutgers' Cappie Pondexter.
Young, the Big 12 Conference's preseason player of the year, returning Kodak All-American and 2005 NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player, led Baylor to its first-ever NCAA women's basketball national championship. In addition, it was the Big 12 Conference's first-ever basketball national title, men or women. En route to the team's 33-3 record last year, Young averaged 18.4 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.0 steals a game.
Young and the Lady Bears begin the regular season Sunday against Georgia in the State Farm Tip-off Classic in Lubbock at 12:00 p.m. CST.
