Softball Rallies for Wild Win over Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas --- After taking a 5-0 lead and then falling behind 7-5, the No. 7 Baylor softball team rallied for a wild 9-7 win over Texas Tech in action at Rocky Johnson Field. With the victory, Baylor improves to 30-4 overall, 1-1 in the Big 12 Conference as Texas Tech falls to 18-10 and 0-1 in conference play.
Baylor jumped out to an early lead against the Red Raiders with a run in the first inning. Harmony Schwethelm reached on a fielding error by Erin Crawford with one out and then eventually stole second with Tessa Lynam at-bat. Then, with Chelsi Lake at the plate, Schwethelm stole third and scored when the throw from catcher Lisa Lawler sailed into left field to give the Lady Bears and early 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bears extended the lead to three in the second when Stephanie Pomes followed a Kim Wilmoth single with a two-run home run, her seventh of the season, over the right field wall to make the score 3-0.
Baylor added another run in the inning when Kelly Osburn doubled to right-center field to score Huffhines, who slid under the tag by Lawler, as the Lady Bears made it a four-run game.
With two outs in the third inning, Chelsi Lake then blasted her first home run of the game over the right field wall as Baylor grabbed a 5-0 lead.
The Red Raiders rallied to take the lead, however, with two runs in the third inning and added five more in the fourth.
Texas Tech cut the lead to three in the bottom of the inning; however, when Natalie Kula hit a two-run home run over the center field wall to make the score 5-2.
After tying the game in the fifth inning on a walk with the bases loaded, Texas Tech grabbed a 7-5 lead when two runs scored when Jennifer Corkin reached on a fielding error with the bases loaded.
The Lady Bears managed to tie the game in the sixth as Baylor scored two unearned runs in the inning to tie the game. After Kim Wilmoth reached on a fielding error by the right fielder, Leerberg reached on a throwing error by pitcher Julie Hauck, allowing Wilmoth to score to cut the Texas Tech lead to one.
After Leerberg advanced to third on a wild pitch, Pomes knotted the score at 7-7 with her sacrifice fly to left field with no outs.
With the game tied at 7-7, Lake then tied Baylor's single season home run mark with a two run line drive just inside the right field foul pole, scoring Schwethelm and giving the Lady Bears a 9-7 lead. The blast pushed Lake's season total to 11, tying Bri Chambliss, who hit 11 in 1997, on Baylor's single season home run list.
Tessa Lynam retired the Red Raiders in the bottom of the inning to move to 7-0 on the season. In the victory, Lynam pitched four innings of relief, allowing two unearned runs on one hit while striking out six Red Raiders.
Erin Crawford took the loss for Texas Tech to fall to 10-5 on the season, allowing seven runs on eight hits in four innings of work.
Lake led the way for Baylor on the night with three RBI and two runs scored as Pomes also added three RBI in the win for Baylor.
The Lady Bears will look to capture the two-game series sweep of Texas Tech when the teams meet in the series finale on Saturday, March 26, at 2:00 p.m.
