2005 NCAA BASEBALL WACO REGIONAL
Waco, Texas - Baylor Ballpark
June 6, 2005
GAME 6 [CHAMPIONSHIP]: (1) Baylor 4 - (3) Stanford 3 [12 innings]
POSTAME QUOTES
Stanford head coach Mark Marquess
On today's game:
"I want to congratulate a great Baylor team, they obviously deserved it they played great. Today's game was a great game, I was very proud of Greg(Reynolds), that was the longest he has gone all year. He really pitched well, he is a big strong guy. But give them credit, we were up one on them at the bottom of the ninth and they hit a home run to tie it. They came up with a big hit and pitch at the time and I know Baylor will do very well in the super regional. I was very impressed with a great game and congratulations to Baylor."
On keeping Greg Reynolds in the game to start the 12th inning:
"It was going to be his (Greg Reynolds) last inning. His pitch count wasn't too bad at that time. It was around 135 which was a lot but he was still strong. If a guy got on then that was going to be it but the first guy got a home run anyway so that was it. He was strong, his stuff was still good, but yeah that was going to be his last inning."
On playing in the Waco Regional:
"I'd like to congratulate Baylor for, number one, an outstanding regional. It was run very first class. They couldn't do enough for us, for all the teams so I wanted to thank the university. We've been to a lot of regionals, this is very well run. Great job by the local people and we thank you for that. It was a great regional.
Stanford pitcher Greg Reynolds
On playing in the heat:
"Well I think it all goes back to our conditioning earlier in the year, a lot of things we did in the fall and in January shows now. It's a long season. Heat did play a factor, but we were conditioned enough and fit enough to put our best performance out there and that's what happened. You can't ask for much more in this game."
On Seth Fortenberry's home-run:
"I think it was fastball and it was elevated, not much to say on that. It was elevated poorly and I payed for it."
Baylor head coach Steve Smith
"It was one of the most special games I have ever been around and I would have said that win or loss. They had a guy (Greg Reynolds) step up and really, really pitch extremely well for them. (Stanford) swung the bats very well. We played very well defensively. We made a couple of great plays. (Kevin) Russo had an outstanding play at third base and Pauly (Witt) made a great play on the line drive. From our standpoint we didn't do anything to lose the game but neither did they. It was a challenging game to manage as they all have been since we lost (Kyle) Reynolds."
On his pitching staff's performance:
"To ask Jeff (Mandel) to do what we asked Jeff to do today, he answered that extremely well. He responded to it and I couldn't be more proud of the guys. I thought (Cory) VanAllen threw very well. They are a good offensive club and when he made a mistake with a fastball up they hit it hard and a couple of those times they hit it out of the park. A few other times they hit it right at us and we were able to make the plays."
On his team's post-game celebration:
"I can't tell you how proud and excited I am for the players. You know the irony of this win today is that it's the first time these group of guys have had the opportunity to dogpile on the mound and they are just flat too tired to do it. Which the silver lining in that cloud is that nobody got hurt, a lot of guys get hurt in dogpiles."
Baylor pitcher Jeff Mandel
On his game-winning home run in the top of the 12th inning:
"I think once you get to the end of the game like that, (Stanford pitcher Greg Reynolds) was feeling loose out there just throwing fastballs. I just went up there looking for a first pitch fastball and he threw it up and I took a hack and that's what happened. I wasn't really in the moment until after I hit it and I felt like it had a chance. My left-handed swing is really weird and I hit a lot of topspin balls and thank goodness he threw it up because I would have topspinned it if it was anywhere down."
Baylor pitcher Ryan LaMotta
On closing out the bottom of the 12th:
"Well it wasn't exactly ideal. That wasn't how I wanted to do it. But three outs with no runs that's the general idea. I made a couple mistakes and they hit them pretty well. Even when I made good pitch they hit that well too. Even the first out of the inning (Jed) Lowrie hit that ball hard too and I definitely wasn't fooling very many people especially early in the inning. So it was a good job by (Kevin) Sevigny to run that down and I was able to work out of it, but it wasn't exactly how you draw it up."
Baylor shortstop Paul Witt
On scoring Baylor's second run in the fifth inning:
"Well it was a hit and run and I didn't want to get thrown out because he was a left-hander and I knew he had a good shot at me at third. So when (Chase Gerdes) hit it I didn't know if it was fair or foul because Chase kind of stood there for a little bit and paused. I rounded third and I saw both of them converging leaving the plate open so I took my chance and got in there and luckily got my hand underneath the tag."
