WACO, Texas - Baylor's men's tennis team began the 2005-06 campaign in impressive fashion in the HEB Baylor Invitational on Friday, Sept. 30 at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Sophomore Lars Poerschke, the tournament's top seed, won both of his matches as did junior Jon Reckewey and freshman Matt Brown. Both of Baylor's doubles teams were victorious as well.
Reckewey was the ironman of the day, extending both of his matches to three sets before claiming victory. Against UT-Arlington's Diego Mattar, Reckewey dropped the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (3) but fought back to take the next two sets 6-4, 6-1 and earn the win. Facing eighth-seeded Mohamed Dakki of Texas A&M, Reckewey changed things up a little, taking the first set 6-4 but dropping the second 6-3. The Lincoln, Neb., native advanced to the quarterfinals when he won the third set 6-4. His quarterfinal opponent will be Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Raul Rivas.
Poerschke, currently ranked No. 25 nationally, received a bye in the round of 32 but handily defeated Anthony Portois of UT-San Antonio 6-2, 6-0 in the next round. The junior from Buseck, Germany will take on TCU's Radu Barbu on Saturday.
Brown, seeing his first collegiate action, advanced to the quarterfinals on Friday, downing Robert Gallman of TCU, 6-3, 6-2 then advancing on a walkover by Nebraska's Jerry Posch. Brown, a native of Chesham, England, will take on Michael Venus of Texas first thing on Saturday.
The only Baylor player to take a loss in Friday's action was junior Vladimir Portnov. The Moscow, Russia, native, dropped a round of 32, three set match to UT-San Antonio's Andre Moreira. Portnov took the first set 6-4, but Moreira stormed back and won the next two, 6-3, 6-1. Dropping into the consolation bracket, Portnov defeated TCU's Gallman, 6-1, 6-4 and will play Dakki on Saturday.
In doubles, Portnov and Reckewey teamed to put UTA's Mattar and Alberto Agis away 8-1 and Brown and Portnov disposed of Joey Farias and Erhart Asaad of Texas A&M-CC, 8-4. Portnov and Reckewey will now face Wichita State's Thaigo Dos Santos and Thaigo Espirito Santos while Brown and Portnov will play UTA's Sandy Farquharson and Daniel Omana.
Saturday's action will begin at 8 a.m. Semifinals and finals will be played on Sunday.
