WACO, Texas - The Baylor men's tennis team found itself in the top 10 for the fourth straight season in today's Fila collegiate tennis rankings administered and released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Baylor came in at No. 7, the lowest of their previous top 10 rankings. Baylor's highest preseason spot came last season when the Bears were ranked No. 1 and maintained the ranking until the NCAA championship match.
Baylor also earned accolades in individual rankings with sophomore Lars Poerschke coming at No. 1 in the preseason ranks. The last Bear to earn a No. 1 spot in the preseason rankings was All- American Benedikt Dorsch in the 2003 season. Michal Kokta and Vladimir Portnov also received rankings with Kokta at No. 31 and Portnov tied for the No. 94 spot.
In doubles, two Baylor teams headed by Matija Zgaga earned top 40 spots. The team of Zgaga and Poerschke came in at No. 23 for the Bears while Zgaga paired with Jon Reckewey to tie for the No. 31 spot.
The Bears will kick off fall action this weekend as they travel to the Sherwood Classic in Los Angeles, Calif. Action will begin Friday at 10 a.m. with the finals beginning Monday morning.
