Men's Tennis Advances Two to Quarterfinals

HOUSTON - Baylor was represented well in first day action in the 9th Annual Rice/Downtown Club at the Met Collegiate Indoor Invitational in Houston on Friday. Michal Kokta, Will Ward and Matt Brown each won first round matches to begin the day.
Kokta, a junior, and Ward, a freshman, each advanced to the quarterfinals with round of 16 victories. Kokta, the tournament's No. 3 seed, won both matches in straight sets, defeating Mikail Pavlov (TAMU-CC), 7-6, 6-1, and Mohamed Dakki of Texas A&M, 6-1, 6-2. Ward, seeing his first action as a Baylor Bear, struggled in his first set against UTA's Alberto Agis before claiming victory, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. In round of 16 action, Ward drubbed UTSA's Rubin Fernandes, 6-0, 6-1.
Brown, also a freshman, defeated 30th-ranked Raul Rivas-Morant (TAMU-CC) in a three-set match, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. However, he fell in second round action to Clemson's Clement Reix.
Galic, playing in his first collegiate competition, lost to 50th-ranked Andrey Kumantsov, 6-3, 6-2.
Singles action will continue on Saturday morning with completion slated for Sunday.
