WACO, Texas -- The No. 12 Oklahoma State soccer team made the most of its scoring chances as the Cowgirls came away with a 3-1 victory over the Baylor soccer team in action at Betty Lou Mays Field on Friday night. With the loss, Baylor falls to 5-8-1, 2-4-0 in Big 12 play, while Oklahoma State improves to 12-2-1, 7-1-0 in conference action, with the win.
"Obviously, we are extremely disappointed in the outcome," head coach George Van Linder said. "I thought we played fairly even with them; however, we made some key miscues that allowed them to score. We have an extremely important match on Sunday and the team needs to rebound and put this loss behind them."
Oklahoma State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals in the 12th and 25th minute. Siera Strawser put the Cowgirls on the board when she corralled an Adriane Radtke shot that deflected off the crossbar and put the ball in the back of the net in the 12th minute to give the Cowgirls the lead.
Merely seconds after entering the game, Kasey Langdon gave Oklahoma State a two goal advantage as she got behind the Baylor defense and collected a long ball from Niccole Grimaldi and put it past a diving Ashley Holder in the 25th minute to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead.
Baylor settled down after the second Oklahoma State goal; however, and managed to cut the lead in half in the 33rd minute. Off a throw in by Nicky Smith, Pat Roscovius headed the ball on net as it deflected off an Oklahoma State defender and over to Katie White.
White found room in the box and drilled a shot into the lower-left hand corner of the net to make the score 2-1. The goal was the first of her career as Baylor went into the break trailing by only one goal.
Despite holding a 9-7 edge in shots in the second half, Oklahoma State managed the only goal during the final 45 minutes as Radtke connected on her third goal of the season in the 59th minute.
The goal was set up by a corner kick as Yolanda Odenyo and Grimaldi recorded assists on the play to help lead Oklahoma State, currently in a tie for first in the Big 12 Conference, to a 3-1 victory.
Holder took the loss in goal for Baylor, making eight saves on the night.
Erin Stigler made five saves in net and picked up the win for Oklahoma State.
Oklahoma State held a slight 16-12 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks as Anna Schuch led the way for Baylor with five shots on the night.
