WACO, Texas - Baylor came out strong, but couldn't match eighth-ranked Texas' defensive intensity the rest of the way as the Longhorns took a 3-1 (20-30, 30-24, 30-20, 30-21) victory in Big 12 volleyball action Saturday night at the Ferrell Center.
Freshman middle blocker Anna Breyfogle (Buda, Texas) led the Bears (15-11, 4-10 Big 12) with 13 kills and nine blocks. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Kelsey Smith (Lubbock, Texas) had double figure kills for the second straight match with 10 kills and added a career-high six blocks. Senior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) had nine kills and nien digs.
Junior libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) led Baylor defensively with 13 digs, while freshman setter Taylor Barnes (Arlington, Texas) had 11 digs and sophomore defensive specialist Amanda Renz (The Woodlands, Texas) had 10.
Ashley Engle led Texas (17-5, 12-3) with 27 kills and 17 digs, while Destinee Hooker had 14 kills and Jennifer Todd had 12. Alyson Jennings led the Longhorns defensively with 14 digs, while Michelle Moriarty added 11.
Baylor hit .439 in game one, while holding Texas to a .098 hitting percentage as the Bears coasted to a 10-point victory. Texas picked it up the rest of the way, hitting .248 over the last three games, while holding Baylor to .091.
Texas hit .212 for the match while Baylor hit .168, but the difference in the match was the Longhorns outdigging the Bears, 76-57. Baylor outblocked Texas, 17.0-9.0.
The Bears return to action for their final non-conference match of the season against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Monday at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center. Baylor returns to Big 12 play against Kansas State Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Ahearn Fieldhouse in Manhattan, Kan.
