WACO, Texas - The No. 8 Baylor men's tennis team will travel to Seattle Washington this weekend to compete in the 2006 USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Washington. Play will begin Friday, Feb. 17 and continue through Monday, Feb. 20. The matches will be split between the Lloyd Nordstom Tennis Center located on the campus of UW and the Seattle Tennis Club.
As the defending National Team Indoor Champions, Baylor is looking to repeat their victory this year. The No. 8 seed, Baylor is joined by No. 1 seed Florida, No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Illinois, No. 4 Pepperdine, No. 5 Mississippi, No. 6 Virginia, No. 7 UCLA, No. 9 Duke, No. 10 LSU, No. 11 South Carolina, No. 12 Washington, No. 13 Florida State, No. 14 Arkansas, No. 15 Colorado, and No. 16 Pennsylvania.
Baylor's first round of action will be tomorrow at 11 a.m. PCT when the Bears take on No. 9 Duke at the Seattle Tennis Center. Should the Bears win, they will face either No.1 Florida or No. 16 Penn on Saturday at 11 a.m. PCT at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Baylor is 0-1 against Florida after falling 4-3 in a home match against the Gators on Jan. 29. They have not faced any other teams from the field this season.
Along with 16 top-ranked schools, there are 34 of the top 100 individuals in the ITA national singles rankings competing in the tournament including Baylor's No. 1 Lars Poerschke. In addition to Poerschke, The tournament features 10 of the top 20 players in the country: No. 2 John Isner of Georgia, No. 3 Benjamin Kohlloeffel of UCLA, No. 6 Treat Huey of Virginia, No. 7 Ryler DeHeart of Illinois, No. 9 Ludovic Walter of Duke, No. 10 Somdev Devvarman of Virginia, No. 12 Strahinja Bobusic of Georgia, No.19 Blake Strode of Arkansas and No. 20 Jonathan Stokke of Duke.
