BERKELEY, Calif. - After a full day of waiting out heavy rains, the No. 9 Baylor men's tennis team came out with a 4-3 victory of No. 14 California yesterday in Berkeley. The match, originally scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (PST), finally got underway at 7:15 p.m.
Baylor took the doubles point to start off earning wins in the No.2 and No. 3 spots. Baylor's team of Lars Poerschke and Michal Kokta defeated Eoin Heavey and Daniel Sebescen in the No. 2 spot 8-2. Will Ward and Matt Brown picked up the win for the Bears in the No. 3 spot defeating Dean Wallace and John Pettit in an 8-0 shut-out. California's team of Conor Miland and Tyler Browne took a win from the Bears defeating Matija Zgaga and Vladimir Portnov 8-4 in the No. 1 spot.
After winning the doubles point, the Bears picked up three singles wins to edge past California. Will Ward continued his winning streak defeating Cal's Daniel Sebescen 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Ward has won his five straight singles dual matches for Baylor making this his career long winning streak.
Michal Kokta also picked up a win for Baylor defeating Ken Nakahara in a two-set 7-5, 6-0 match. Matt Brown's win over Cal's John Pettit 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 6 spot sealed the victory for Baylor.
With this win, Baylor is now 6-3 on the season and has won its last four straight matches. Later today, the Bears hope to make it five straight wins as they face No. 7 Stanford in Palo Alto, California at 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27.
