WACO, Texas - Baylor signee Demond "Tweety" Carter will play in the prestigious 2006 McDonald's All-American High School Basketball Game to be televised live on ESPN Wednesday, March 29, at 9 p.m. CST.
The 5-10, 170-pound guard will play for the West Team in the 29th annual all-star game, featuring the nation's top 24 players, to be played at Cox Arena in San Diego, Calif. Proceeds from the McDonald's All-American game help support the host city's local Ronald McDonald House charities and initiatives.
Carter also participated in the 3-point competition as part of the Powerade Jam Fest held Monday. The Jam Fest events will be televised on ESPN Wednesday at 11 p.m. CST following the All-American game.
A native of LaPlace, La., Carter is the first Baylor player to be selected a McDonald's All-American. The McDonald's game is one of two all-star contests he will play in. Carter was also selected to participate in the 2006 Jordan All-American Classic to be played April 22 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The incoming freshman finished his fantastic prep career at Reserve Christian School with 7,494 career points, more than any high school player ever. Carter will officially rank second in scoring on the National Federation of State High School Association's all-time record book because it will not include the points he scored during his seventh and eighth grade seasons on the varsity team.
Among his numerous accomplishments, Carter led RCS to four state championships (including the school's first-ever title in 2002 as an eighth grader when he was honored as the tournament MVP), was a five-time Outstanding Player of the Year in Louisiana, was a five-time all-state selection and was a four-time state tournament MVP.
Earlier this month Carter led RCS to its fourth state championship and a 48-8 record. He scored 38 points in the 96-56 state championship win over Marion and was named the tournament MVP. Carter averaged 33 points as a senior in 2005-2006 and shattered the national high school 3-pointers made record, hitting 287 3-point field goals (old mark was 215). He scored a single-game high 74 points as a senior in a 114-71 win over East St. John's.
Carter has been a varsity starter since the seventh grade and earned fame as an eighth grader in 2002 when he was one of the first two middle-school athletes ever to be invited to the Nike All-America Camps (with Derrick Caracter of Scotch Plains, N.J.). He also participated in Nike All-America Camps and the Nike Hoop Jamboree following his freshman and junior seasons. After his sophomore year, Carter was a member of the USA Basketball North Team that won a silver medal at the 2004 Men's Youth Development Festival.
Carter was honored as the 2005 National Christian School Athletic Association Player of the Year as a junior and the 2003 national high school freshman of the year (for all sports) by SuperPrep.com.
