AUSTIN, Texas - No. 8 Texas got consecutive two-out RBI doubles from Jordan Danks and Drew Stubbs to break at 6-6 tie in the bottom of the seventh and went on to an 8-6 victory over No. 24 Baylor in Big 12 Conference action Friday night at Disch-Falk Field. After winning Thursday night's 7-6, 13-inning marathon, the Longhorns (26-12, 11-2) have clinched the series against the Bears (22-14, 7-7).
After Bradley Suttle lined out to Baylor third baseman Kevin Russo to lead off the seventh, Chais Fuller looped a double down the line in left. It was the first hit Baylor starter Cory VanAllen had allowed since the third inning. VanAllen got Clay Van Hook to ground out, moving Fuller to third, but Danks doubled home Fuller on a 1-2 VanAllen offering for the game-winning hit.
The two-run seventh made a winner of Texas reliever Joseph Krebbs (2-0), who held Baylor scoreless on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
VanAllen (3-4) was saddled with the loss. He was touched for eight runs on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
Texas took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Drew Stubbs blasted the first of three Texas home runs on the night.
Baylor answered with a two-spot in the top of the second, thanks to a Kevin Sevigny RBI ground-rule double and a Beamer Weems sacrifice fly.
In the fourth, Texas recaptured the lead on a three-run Carson Kainer homer. Preston Clark followed with a solo shot to push the Horns' lead to 6-2.
Again the Bears answered immediately in the top of the fifth. Baylor loaded the bases with one out, and Seth Fortenberry cleared them with his Big 12 leading sixth triple of the season. Zach Dillon then plated Fortenberry with a single through the right side.
Texas starter Adrian Alaniz was touched for six runs on five hits and five walks with four punch outs over 3.1 innings.
Dillon, Sevigny and Jeff Mandel led the Bears at the plate with two hits apiece; Dillon reached in four of five plate appearance. Fortenberry's triple extended his hitting streak in Big 12 games to 12 contests.
Baylor and Texas conclude the series Sunday at 2 p.m. CDT. The Bears send right-hander (3-3, 5.32) to the mound, opposite Longhorn right-hander Kyle McCulloch (3-3, 2.98).
Sunday's game will be televised live nationally on CSTV. The game will be aired live in the Waco are on Time Warner Cable Channel 16.
