WACO, Texas - The No. 1 seeded Baylor men's tennis team defeated No. 8 seed Nebraska today in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Tennis Championships at the Baylor Tennis Center. Baylor downed Nebraska 4-0 to advance to the championship semifinals.
After resetting the brackets due to threatening weather, Baylor took court at 12:30 p.m. with No. 1-3 singles playing first. On the No.1 court, No. 6 ranked Lars Poerschke quickly took down Nebraska's Jerry Posch 6-1, 6-2 which freed up the court for No. 4 Will Ward to begin action.
Next to finish was No. 61 Matija Zgaga who fought through three sets against Adrian Szatmary taking the 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory and putting Baylor up 2-0. Will Ward made quick work of Nebraska's Renato Melo winning 6-2, 6-1 and giving Baylor a 3-0 advantage.
After dropping his first set in the No. 3 spot 1-6, Michal Kokta fought back against Nebraska's James Clow taking the second set in a tiebreaker 7-6(3). Kokta went on to clinch the match for the Bears with a 6-4 score in set three.
Matt Brown and Vladimir Portnov did not finish on the No. 5 and 6 courts.
With the win, Baylor advances to the semifinal round where they will take on No. 4 seed Oklahoma State, who defeated No. 5 Texas A&M 4-2 earlier today to advance. The match will begin at 7 p.m. tomorrow night at the Baylor Tennis Center.
