NORMAN, Okla. - Baylor men's tennis team fought it out against Big 12 opponent Oklahoma last night defeating the Sooners 4-2 in Norman. With the win, the Bears increase to 15-4, 2-0 in conference play. Oklahoma is now 14-7, 1-4.
Due to inclement weather, the match was moved to the Willow Creek Indoor Facility in Oklahoma City. Because of the OU women's tennis match earlier in the evening which lasted six hours, the men's squad did not hit the courts until 11:30 p.m. and did not finish until 3:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
Because of the late start time, the men opted to skip the doubles play and moved straight into singles. Only three courts were available so the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions took the court first. Will Ward tried to get things moving for the Bears quickly finishing off Tommy Garrison on the No. 3 court in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
No. 12 Lars Poerschke put the Bears up 2-0 with a win over Alexei Ivanov 6-2, 7-6 (5). No. 45 Matija Zgaga couldn't hold on to his three-set match against No. 95 Marek Valicka at No. 1 falling 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
With Baylor up 2-1, the No. 4, 5, and 6 positions took the court looking for two more wins to finish the match. Michal Kokta and Matt Brown brought those wins for the Bears with Kokta defeating Lee Greg 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 and Brown clenching the match with a win over Matt Long in straight sets 7-6, 7-5.
Vladimir Portnov was only other loss for the Bears at the No. 5 spot. Portnov fell to Sergey Avdeyev 6-4, 7-5.
Next up, the Bears will face Oklahoma State Sunday, April 9 in Stillwater, Okla. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
