No. 4 Baylor - The 23-6 Baylor Bears, ranked No. 4 nationally and the championship's No. 5 seed, are participating in their ninth NCAA Championship and fourth straight Round of 16 appearance. The Bears are led by fourth-ranked Lars Poerschke, No. 29 Michal Kokta, No. 65 Matija Zgaga and No. 124 Matt Brown. Kokta leads the team in singles wins with a 37-7 record while Poerschke follows with a 35-9 mark. Kokta and Poerschke are the Bears' highest ranked doubles duo at No. 23. They are 14-1 on the season, all coming in dual match play. They are 7-1 at the No. 1 spot and 7-0 on court two.
Washington (ranked #21) - The Huskies, 20-5 on the season, advanced to the round of 16 with wins over Penn State (4-2) and an upset of 12th-seeded and regional host Virginia Commonwealth (4-0). Washington, guided by 11th-year head coach Matt Anger, currently has one ranked player, junior Alex Slovic, a native of Pancevo, Yugoslavia, is listed at No. 44 and plays in the No. 1 spot for the Huskies.
Versus Washington...
• Baylor is 1-1 all-time versus Washington (BU lost 6-3 in 1988 at San Diego Invitational)
• Matt Knoll is 1-0 against the Huskies to produce BU's lone win in two tries. The Bears defeated Washington 4-0 on March 7, 1999 at the HEB Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Versus PAC-10...
• Baylor is 18-6 all-time versus Pac-10 schools
• Coach Knoll is 17-5 against Pac-10 schools including a 4-0 mark this season.
Baylor Quick Notes...
• Seventeen of Baylor's 24 regular season matches were against teams competing in the 2006 NCAA Championships, BU posted a 12-5 mark versus those teams. Of those teams, BU could still face three of them (Virginia, Duke, Stanford), the Bears are 1-2 against those three this season.
• Baylor currently ranked No. 4 ... it is the third time this season the Bears have been No. 4, they also achieved that listing on April 11 and 25.
• Baylor is making for its fifth-straight NCAA Sweet 16 appearance and seventh overall.
• BU is making its ninth straight NCAA Championships appearance.
• The Bears have won five straight regular season Big 12 Championships and six of the last seven.
• The Bears have not been ranked lower than ninth nationally over the past four seasons.
• Baylor is 143-13 over the past four seasons (27-2 in 2002; 28-2 in 2003; 32-2 in 2004; 33-1 in 2005 and 23-6 so far in 2006).
• Sophomore Lars Poerschke is the only Bear to be named Big 12 Player of the Week this season, he's achieve it twice (March 13 & April 25).
• Poerschke and junior Michal Kokta were named All-Big 12 in both singles and doubles. Poerschke was a unanimous selection in both singles and doubles.
• Poerschke and Kokta have been selected to participate in the NCAA Championships singles and doubles brackets.
• Poerschke is undefeated in Big 12 regular season action at 14-0. He was 7-0 last season and repeated that mark in 2006.
• Poerschke has a 14-match win streak in tact, his last loss came on March 13 versus then-17th-ranked Scott Doerner of Pepperdine.
• Junior Matija Zgaga ranks No. 5 (tie) in doubles (79) and No. 8 in singles (75) on BU's career list.
• Junior Michal Kokta ranks No. 10 on BU's career singles win list with 73 and sits at No. 6 in singles wins in a season with 37 so far in 2006.
• Baylor is a young squad with three juniors, two sophomores, and two freshmen.
