WACO, Texas - Middle blocker Anna Breyfogle (Buda, Texas) and setter Taylor Barnes (Arlington, Texas) were on the same page from the outset as the freshman duo led the Green team to a 30-17, 32-30 victory over the White team in the Meet the Bears scrimmage Sunday afternoon at Marrs McLean Gymnasium.
Breyfogle hit .750 with a match-high nine kills and no errors on 12 attempts, while Barnes had four kills and 29 assists. Senior Adeline Meira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added eight kills and a match-high three blocks, while senior Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) had six kills. Sophomore libero Amanda Renz (The Woodlands, Texas) led the Green team defensively with a match-high 15 digs, while redshirt freshman Kelsey Smith (Lubbock, Texas) added 13.
Senior Deja Sweeney (Sacramento, Calif.) led the White team with seven kills, while senior middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) and freshman Katie Sanders (Katy, Texas) had six each. Redshirt freshman libero Jenné Blackburn (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) had 10 digs, and junior setter Amanda Modglin (Houston, Texas) had 19 assists.
"This was a good opportunity to work through some of the jitters," head coach Jim Barnes said. "They were very competitive and aggressive. I was pleased with them defensively, they were tough and scrappy and not too many easy balls hit the floor."
The Bears open the 2006 season against UC-Davis Friday at the Cal Molten Classic in Berkeley, Calif. Baylor will also face Montana and 17th-ranked California Saturday.
